Welcome to my Pern! It is meant to be a very generic version of Pern so that all the crazy plots and characters can really stand out. I could probably get away without providing any of this information, but some people feel safer knowing how the world is shaped, so here we go.
Our story begins toward the end of the 10th Pass. The events of Anne McCaffrey’s 9th Pass should be considered altered in the following ways:
- AIVAS was discovered during the 9th Pass, but did not function. The orbit of the Red Star was therefore never altered, and the 10th Pass has arrived on schedule, about 200 years after Anne’s stories conclude.
- Telekinetic abilities of dragons, excepting their ability to go between, were never discovered.
- Whers can’t fly and will not likely play any romantic roles in this story.
- Impression of females to green dragons continued to be exceptionally rare, eventually dwindling out as hatchings became less frequent through the Interval. At the point when our story begins, female greenriders are considered to be to be a fable rather than historical fact.
- Some technological advances have been made as a result of being able to access some of AIVAS’s stored data. This has allowed for things like paper products, advanced medical procedures, an elevated standard of hygiene, and a large number of free-standing buildings (that is, buildings constructed rather than built into cliff faces or caves). Other items may turn up periodically as the story requires.
- The Renewable Air Force Document will be disregarded in this story, and sexual inclination of the riders will have no bearing on color-pairings for dragons.
And now, the physical set-up of my 10th Pass Pern:
- There are now 18 Weyrs: Benden, Fort, Igen, Ista, High Reaches, Telgar, and Shardin Weyr in the North; Southern, Xanadu, Cove, and six unnamed Weyrs in the South; Eastern off on that funny island. The currently unnamed Weyrs may be given names at a later date if necessary.
- Shardin Weyr is located somewhere in the North. I haven’t pinned down an exact location yet, but I don’t think that’s actually too important. Should that change, I’ll let you know.
- Comos, Idjut, and Dufas are the three major Holds in Shardin’s territory. Other locales of note include Poppy’s, a Way-Station/Inn located at an intersection of the two main trade routs that run through the territory.
- Shardin Weyr is a traditional bowl-shaped Weyr. It has an artificial lake inside the bowl, ample space for a great multitude of dragons, and no other particularly distinctive features (unless I need to create any as we go along.)
